This is taken from Peter's speech in Acts 2 where he quotes the prophet Joel. The demo
is quiet but the worship team turned it into a powerful Irish-rock anthem that blew me away - kind of puts
me in mind of one of my favorite bands, the Duhks.
Some thoughts I wrote to the team when I introduced this song:
I was struck by the emphasis in this verse: who will be the prophets of God? Not who you expect: not the learned or the prestigious or those in authority but rather, the young, and the elderly, and servants, and (this is emphasized twice) both men *and* women. God will pour out his Spirit on "all flesh", and *they will* speak His words to the earth.
This is strange and good news, although before you get excited about being a prophet of God it is well to see how they fared in Scripture: almost invariably they are the subject of abuse and rejection on account of their message, notably from the religious establishment of their day. A faithful witness to truth in our day can expect no less.
I know that it seems like too many contemporary Christians seize the mantel of "prophet" as an excuse to be abusive or contemptuous or heterodox or disengaged from our society.
But at the end of the day, Biblical prophets may be folks who are in the mode of "look, I didn't ASK for this job." But whether from obedience or the irresistible urging of the Spirit, they are incapable of keeping their message hidden. And they surrender to the will of God come what may.
